We provide emergency shelter and comprehensive support to women and children fleeing domestic abuse. The shelters specialize in culturally sensitive services and is the largest charitable, non-profit agency of its kind in the greater Edmonton region.

Description of Services:

Edmonton Women’s Shelter Ltd. (EWS), most commonly known as WIN House, is a non-profit agency operating three shelters, WIN I, WIN II and Carol’s House (formerlly WIN III) . The WIN Houses are for women with or without children who are fleeing domestic violence. Edmonton Women’s Shelter started when a group of concerned citizens met in 1968 to consider the growing problem of homeless women in Edmonton. In 1970, they opened an overnight emergency shelter in the basement of All Saints Cathedral. On September 26, 1973, EWS incorporated.

WIN I opened in 1978,  WIN II in 1982 and 2014 Carol’s House (formerlly WIN III, 2010) provides comprehensive and culturally sensitive support services to immigrants, refugees and victims of human trafficking. The shelters operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

  • emergency shelter, food and personal necessities for women and children (for a period of up to three weeks) who are seeking refuge from abusive relationships
  • pet safekeeping program
  • weekly support groups for shelter residents
  • referrals to community agencies
  • regular visits by a Registered Nurse
  • weekly visits from a representative of Employment & Immigration to apply for the Supports for Independence Program
  • child support program
  • school maintenance program, offered through Edmonton Public School District for children from K-9
  • outreach program to assist women with meeting their long term goals
  • household packages for women leaving shelter
