Thank you for your interest in volunteering with WIN House. Our volunteers are essential in helping us to achieve our mission of furthering non-violent relationships and environments in our community. Volunteering with us is also an opportunity for you to meet new people, learn more about our organization, and have fun! 

 

We have a variety of roles that fit every skillset, schedule, and preference. We’re excited to have you join our team. 

 

*Please note volunteers must be 18 years of age to volunteer alone. Volunteers aged 12-17 may volunteer if accompanied by an adult. Please reach out to community@winhouse.org if you have questions.

Becoming a Volunteer

As part of your volunteer experience, we provide the teaching, training, and tools you need to be a successful WIN House volunteer. The education, skills, and real life experiences you’ll gain as part of your time with WIN House are not only a rewarding part of being a volunteer, but also transferable to your resume and future life endeavours. 

HOW TO APPLY

 

Submit your application online. A member of the WIN House Development team will review your application and, upon approval, we will reach out to you to confirm your interest. 

Attend an Orientation: All volunteers are required to complete an orientation prior to their first volunteer shift.  

*For the safety of our volunteers, staff, and residents, those interested in becoming Donation Support and/or Administration & Office Volunteers will be contacted after attending an orientation to complete a Police Information Check, an interview, and reference checks prior to their first shift. This does not apply to Community Event Volunteers.

Volunteer Role Descriptions

COMMUNITY EVENTS

  • This role will include assisting the WIN House fundraising team at community-based events and initiatives. This includes third-party events as well as WIN House events. Responsibilities may include helping with event set up and take down, engaging with community members, sharing resources, and assisting in various event specific roles. This role may or may not be wheelchair accessible and may require heavy lifting. 

    • Commitment: Occasional, may occur on weekends or in evenings. 

    • Best for those who: 

      • Are comfortable engaging with the public. 

      • Want to help spread awareness regarding non-violent relationships and environments for women and non-binary individuals with or without children. 

      • Are problem-solvers and can easily pivot. 

      • Are looking for a flexible way to get involved with WIN House. 

  • Types of Community Events:
     

    • Trade Shows/Conferences/Expos

    • Sporting Events

    • Festivals/Concerts

    • Golf Tournaments

    • Galas/Fundraisers

    • Corporate Events

    • Third-Party Event

DONATION SUPPORT

  • This role includes assisting in organizing, sorting, and managing incoming and outgoing in-kind donations; helping to fulfill shelter requests; and providing other support as needed. This role is non-wheelchair accessible and may require heavy lifting. 

    • Commitment: Occasional or shifted, will usually occur during business hours (Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:30pm) 

    • Best for those who:  

      • Have strong organizational skills.  

      • Want to help fulfill shelter needs.  

      • Are looking for more consistent shifts.  

    • Requirements: 

      • Police Information Check

      • 1:1 Interview  

      • Reference Checks 

OFFICE & ADMINISTRATION

  • This role will provide office and administrative support to the WIN House fundraising team through answering phone calls, emails, managing documents, and other duties as assigned. This role is wheelchair accessible.  

    • Commitment: Occasional or shifted, will usually occur during business hours (Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:30pm) 

    • Best for those who: 

      • Enjoy data-oriented tasks. 

      • Have administrative experience (preferred). 

      • Are highly organized and are comfortable working independently.  

      • Are looking for more consistent shifts. 

    • Requirements: 

      • Police Information Check

      • 1:1 Interview  

      • Reference Checks 

SHELTER SUPPORT

  • Under the supervision of the Shelter Operations Team, volunteers will assist in shelter. This may include leading activities, assisting with seasonal projects, and helping the team with various tasks. Shelter Support Volunteers will work at shelters. This role may or may not be wheelchair accessible.

    • Commitment: Occasional or shifted, will usually occur during business hours (Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:30pm)

    • Best for those who: 

      • Enjoy connecting with people of all ages.

      • Are problem solvers who can easily pivot.

    • Requirements: 

      • Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Check

      • 1:1 Interview

      • Reference Checks

GARDEN PROGRAM

  • Under the direction of the Shelter Operations Team, volunteers will provide support, care, and maintenance of the WIN House Garden Program through planting, weeding, harvesting, and other duties as assigned. Garden Program Volunteers will work at shelters. This role is wheelchair accessible.

    • Commitment: Occasional or shifted, will usually occur during business hours (Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:30pm)

    • Best for those who: 

      • Have gardening experience.

      • Enjoy connecting with people of all ages.

      • Are available in the summer.

    • Requirements: 

      • Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Check

      • 1:1 Interview

      • Reference Checks

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

  • This role is Seeking Dynamic Members to join the Board of Directors at WIN House. WIN House is committed to an equitable, diverse, and inclusive Board of Directors, volunteers, and workforce.

    • Best for those interested in:

      • Representing diverse professional experiences and personal backgrounds passionate about community service.

      • Making a difference in the lives of women and children who have experienced intimate partner violence.

      • Providing fiduciary oversight and strategic planning for the operations of WIN House.
